PANAMA CITY, FL -- A recent newspaper article stressed that bondsmen in Florida must undergo strict licensing requirements. The Department of Financial Services requires that applicants applying for a bondsman’s license in Florida have at least a high school diploma, residency in the state, US citizenship, a clean criminal record, and an age of majority (at least 18 years old). Applicants also need three reputable local residents to vouch for them. Applicants must also take 120 hours of training, submit to a background test, and pass an exam. After all of this, bondsmen are given a temporary license for 18 months. They can apply for a permanent license after at least 12 months. Attorneys and current law enforcement authorities are not allowed to act as bondsmen in the state.
