Editor’s Note: The information for this article was compiled through extensive research, however, as some amounts may have been missed, it is not guaranteed that the selected amounts are an accurate representation of the largest bail amounts of the year.
As the year comes to a close AboutBail decided to look into the largest bail amounts of 2012. It was a big year for bail, and a variety of individuals and offenses are on the list, including several sexual assault cases, murders, insider trading, and eluding arrest. The defendants range from young individuals to teachers and hedge fund portfolio managers.

#10 - $4.2 Million
David Navarro - Attempted Murder
David Navarro, a resident of Soledad, California, was arrested for allegedly firing shots at police officers while running across a highway. Navarro had been riding in a friend's car when the police had tried to pull them over. Navaro was wanted on suspicion of raping a minor and posession of illegal drugs and ran from the car while shooting errantly at the officers. As he shot at five total officers, he has been charged with five counts of attempted murder.

#9 - $5 Million
Mathew Martoma - Insider Trading
Mathew Martoma, a former hedge fund portfolio manager, is the defendant in one of the largest insider trading fraud lawsuits in U.S. history. Martoma managed to avoid losses and sell short $246 million dollars in a two day period, making it the largest insider trading transaction in history. Martoma exploited a relationship with a medical school professor to obtain confidential informaton about a new Alzheimer's drug. He is the fourth person associated with company SAC Capital in the past four years to be arrested in connection with insider trading charges.

#9 - $5 Million
Joseph David Dorsey - Murder
Lake Elslnore resident Joseph David Dorsey was held on $5 million bail after allegedly murdering a woman and stuffing her remains into a suitcase. Though $1 million is the general amount set by the bail schedule for a murder case, the prosecutor explained that as authorities had to spend significant funds to extradite Dorsey from Mexico that he was a flight risk. The bail amount was then increased.

#8 - $6 Million
Eddie Matthew Mosley - Murder
Eddie Matthew Mosley of St. Louis was held on three counts of second degree murder for killing a woman and her elderly parents at a Brooklyn Park daycare. Mosley was allegedly looking for a teenager who had accused him of rape with intent to kill her. The teenage girl had been staying with one of the murder victims before going to school. Mosley shot each victim multiple times.

#7 - $7.8 Million
Gerald Eugene Walker - Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, other charges
Gerald Eugene Walker was held on a $7.8 million bail for a variety of charges after a routine traffic stop led to an exchange of gunfire between Walker and the police. He was arrested after the incident and charge with assault with a deadly weapon on a goverment official, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting arrest. Previous charges of first-degree sex offense with a child under the age of 13, one count of felony larceny, and two counts of felony conspiracy were also served in warrents after his arrest. Walker has 24 prior convictions.

Alvin Watts and Jake England - Murder
In early April, Oklahoma men Alvin Watts and Jake England, 32 and 19 respectively, were arrested on suspicion of three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and an additional count of possession of a firearm with intent to kill. The due was accused of going on a shooting rampage in Tulsa that injured two in addition to killing three.

Hun Saelee - Attempted Murder
On October 31st, Hun Saelee of San Leandro, California, attended a Halloween party. Partygoer Ben Pessah was leaving with his girlfrend when Saelee allegedly grabbed her chest. Saelee--who was allegedly looking for a fight--retrieved a gun from the trunk of his car and began pointing it at various partygoers. Witnesses say that they don't know what exactly provoked the incident. Pessah tried to run but was shot by Saelee, sustaining life-threating injuries to his head and was placed in a medically induced coma. Saelee fled the scene but was later apprehended.

Adrian G. Sassen Van Elsloo - Eluding Police, Possession of Narcotics and Weapons
Following a police chase through two counties that ended in a crash and armed standoff, Adrian G. Sassen Van Elsloo went on the run. Wanted on numerous drug, weapons, and eluding charges, Sassen Van Elsloo was spotted by an unmarked police car. As the car followed, Sassen Van Elsloo drove erratically and sped up when more police cars joined the chase. The chase ended when his car hit spike strips and came to rest in a ditch. The cops were forced to fire a non-lethal pepper ball into his car in order to appreend him.

Rajat Gupta - Insider Trading (under appeal)
While seeking an appeal for an insider-trading conviction, Rajat Gupta, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc board member, is out on $10 million bail. The 64 year old was convicted of leaking boardroom secrets to a hedge-fund manager at the center of the U.S. government's four year crackdown on insider training.

#4 - $23 Million
Mark Berndt - Sexual Assault
Berndt, a former Los Angeles teacher, has been charged with committing lewd acts against several children between the ages of 7 and 10. The list of alleged victims includes 23 boys and girls with another five having stepped forward. Berndt allegedly blindfolded students and asked them to play a "tasting game" of salty or sweet and took photos of the incident. A worker at a photo lab turned photos over to the police, which show children gagged with tape and with cockroaches crawling on their faces. 400 total photos were seized from Berndt's residence and the photo lab.

Binh Thai Luc - Murder
San Francisco resident Binh Thai Luc was arrested for allegedly committing five murders in the Ingleside neighborhood. He was accused of killing two men and three women in March of this year.

#2 - $28 Million
Dereck Sanders "The Roaming Rapist" - Sexual Assault
Though initial set at a lower amount, bail for Dereck Sanders, the alleged "Roaming Rapist" was increased to $28 million. He is accused of victimizing 10 woman from across the country including 14 and 15-year-old friends between 1998 and 2003. Included in the 35 counts of sexual assault that Sanders faces are 15 counts of rape by force and nine counts of kidnapping.

Robert Gaskill - Sexual Assault
The 63 year old man from River Forest, Illinois, was accused of sexually abusing two children for more than a decade. Gaskill allegedly assaulted two victims under the age of eighteen over a 15 year period beginning in 1996. He has been charged with two Class X felony counts of criminal sexual assault against a child.
