The AboutBail 4th of July Giveaway

Summer officially started on June 20th, and we launched the AboutBail.com Summer Giveaway to kick off the season! Every other business day for the past two weeks, we have posted bail-related questions on the AboutBail.com Facebook fan page. Fans were encouraged to answer the questions for the chance to win $20 gift certificates to Amazon.com,and we are pleased to announce the following winners: Carol Gordon Newman, Dan Callahan, Adam Powell, Susan Rastella and (?).
The answers we received from participants ranged from the serious to the hilarious, and we’ve highlighted some of our favorite responses below:
What do you think is the biggest misconception about the bail industry?
Our winner, Carol Gordon Newman, answered simply, “That bailbondsmen are men,” and other female fans echoed a similar sentiment. Another fan noted how, “Indemnitors tend to think they get their money back. I feel like asking them, ‘Does Burger King give your money back after you finish your Whopper and fries?’”
What is the craziest piece of collateral you've ever been offered by a guarantor?
There was no shortage of interesting and shocking responses to this question. One fan replied, “A child! They offered to give me the youngest child to show that they’d be good for the bail amount. I said, ‘Nope! I barely want my own.” Another fan answered,
“Guns, scooters, jewelry, children,” – presumably in no particular order. Other colorful answers included, “The defendant’s gold teeth,” and “A Jesus rock.” The winning response answered our question with another question, as Dan Callahan wrote, “Collateral? I would be happy to just get the premium (in full).”
What is the highest bail amount you've ever rejected?
The chart topping amount was $2 million for attempted murder, but bail agents had a lot of specifics for why they rejected the bond. A $120,000 bond was rejected because the collateral was iffy and the house was in another state, while a $250,000 bond was reject because the indemnitor couldn't come up with the collateral at all. One fan shared that although one applicant had half of the premium and a house for collateral, he didn't have a good feeling about it and followed his gut to reject the $150,000.00 bond. It turned out to be a good thing after all, as another bondsman wrote the bond and ended up paying in full. One fan boldly stated that he rejected a $500,000 bond for 1st degree child molestation, saying, "If I got him out I might have shot him."
We also asked what the first course of action should be once a bail agent learns that an applicant has jumped bail (“Procure a certified copy of the bond, period.”)
Our final question asks fans to get creative by filling in the blank with 10 words or less: A good Bail Agent is someone who ____________? We’ve gotten some great responses so far (“someone who is open-minded, intelligent and makes wise decisions”; “someone who gets the job done while caring for the people being bonded”), but the contest doesn’t end until this afternoon. So, if you haven’t commented on the AboutBail Facebook fan page yet, head on over and submit a response for your chance to win a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com!
